Education and Training Sessions

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

IEHOA has created education and training sessions in order to bring up topics and discussion around officiating both within our association and from the national level

The first education and training session happened in December of 2019. These sessions are meant to bring officials within our association together in order to grow both on and off the ice. The first guest speaker was former NHL official and IEHOA Alumni, Dennis LaRue.

This past month was the second session which had Steve Stevens, long-time Pacific District Referee-In-Chief. The topics covered during this second session included:

How do you build a good rapport with the coaches and players before the game? If a game seems to be getting out of control how do you reel it back in?

How much "thick skin" is an official supposed to have? when has a coach/player crossed the line to receive a bench minor or misconduct?

Doing a non-checking game how do you establish the difference between body contact vs body checking? For example A player is not a good skater and makes contact with an opponent attempting to play the puck and knocks them down Do you penalize that player even though they didn't intend on making contact?

When the puck is at the net and there is a good battle going on how to you watch for things like a defensemen taking out an opponent (ie slash, crosscheck, high stick, etc) while looking down and watching to see if the puck enters the goal legally?

Information regarding this upcoming month's session is still yet to be announced, but we hope it will be a success and we hope we can continue to grow this program for all officials. Be sure to be pay attention for any upcoming announcements that will be emailed out, and plan accordingly so you can join us for the next education and training session.
